Program

  • F. SCHUBERT Notturno in E flat major, D.897
  • D. ELFMAN Piano quartet (2017)

  • G. FAURÉ Piano quartet no. 2 in G Minor, op. 45

Camerata Nordica Chamber Ensemble is excited to announce their upcoming collaboration with pianist Roland Pöntinen for the first time.

Together, they will present an engaging program featuring Schubert’s Notturno followed by a captivating quartet composed in 2017 by the renowned Danny Elfman, a prominent figure in the realm of film scores. Elfman is known for his contributions to nearly twenty Tim Burton films, collaborations with Gus Van Sant, and his multiple nominations for prestigious awards such as Oscars, Emmys, and a Grammy. Reflecting on his work in the Piano Quartet, Elfman explains that his initial thematic idea was a playful variation inspired by a childhood rhyme “naa na naa na naa naa!”, which can be heard in the second movement of the piece, titled Kinderspott. Fans of Elfman’s film music will undoubtedly recognize his signature style within this quartet.

The second part of the concert will feature Fauré’s second piano quartet in G minor. While the first piano quartet by Fauré is frequently performed and extensively revised, little is known about the genesis of the second quartet. Despite its infrequent appearances on concert programs, the tonal language of the second quartet is characterized by a heartfelt and expansive quality, underscoring its significance as one of Fauré’s finest works in the chamber music genre. This piece holds a special place in Roland Pöntinen’s repertoire, as it ranks among his personal favorites.
