Malin Broman first performed with Camerata Nordica in January 2023, receiving high praise for the symphonic program. She is now returning to perform a program focusing on strings featuring Richard Strauss’s Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. This piece was composed during the final stages of World War II, with Strauss’s intentions remaining ambiguous. Many interpret the music as a reflection of grief over the bombing of Germany and the destruction of the Munich opera house.
Malin will be joined by Dutch double bass player Rick Stotjin from Sweden’s Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he serves as soloist and sectional leader. Together, they will present a new arrangement of Stravinsky’s Suite Italienne for violin, double bass, and strings. Suite Italienne originated from the ballet Pulcinella, commissioned by the Russian Ballet in 1920.
Stravinsky’s innovative approach to incorporating baroque harmonies with dissonant chords and irregular rhythms in Suite Italienne was met with controversy. He credited his work on Pulcinella as the inspiration for his future compositions.
