This programme unites two iconic Andalusian voices, Joaquín Turina and Manuel de Falla, in music that blends flamenco colours, folk traditions and an irresistible rhythmic energy. Intimate, dramatic and full of atmosphere, it offers audiences a powerful taste of Andalusia’s poetry, passion and mystique.
Joaquín Turina, born in Seville, draws direct inspiration from his homeland’s colours and atmosphere in Las musas de Andalucía. Each of the nine short movements is inspired by one of the classical Muses, but Turina interprets them through a distinctly Andalusian lens: warm harmonies, gentle melodies and dance-like rhythms that evoke sun-drenched streets, the sound of guitars and the intimacy of chamber music. The result is a work that feels both refined and deeply rooted in its surroundings, expressive, concentrated and full of Mediterranean light.
The journey continues with the original gitanería version of Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo from 1915. De Falla, born in Cádiz, had a deep connection to the Andalusiancante jondo tradition and Romani culture. In this intensely dramatic music for voice and chamber ensemble, he tells the story of Candela, a young woman haunted by her former lover. Through whispered incantations, sensuous melodies and driven rhythmic playing, the work unites flamenco influences with vivid instrumental colours. The famous Ritual Fire Dance forms a blazing climax, a release of raw energy and emotional liberation.
Together, these two works paint complementary portraits of Andalusia: its luminous poetry and its ancient, mysterious soul. A journey through passion, ritual and the irresistible power of Spain’s southernmost landscape.
