The concert

Camerata Nordica’s Octet is an ensemble of principal players drawn from the ranks of it’s orchestra. Following several  international tour that included their debut at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Octet now brings its program home to Swedish audiences.

The program opens with two traditional pieces arranged for string octet by K.J. Ankarblom and Camerata Nordica: Låt till far and a Polska in A minor after the renowned Swedish fiddler Karl Lindblad. Rooted in Scandinavian folk tradition, these works set the stage for an evening that moves between the intimately familiar and the boldly original.

At the heart of the program is the world premiere commission The Nordic Seasons, a four-movement work written by violinist and composer Hanna Helgegren expressly for Camerata Nordica. Inspired by the melody “Länge leve livet” and by the cycles of the Nordic landscape, the piece traverses Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer, and is performed alongside a film of Swedish landscape imagery directed by British filmmaker Jack Walton. It is a work of rare emotional depth, capturing both the darkness of winter and the return of light.

The first half closes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Two Pieces for String Octet, op. 11, composed when the Russian master was still a teenager. Edgy, rhythmically driven, and startlingly modern, these two pieces offer a glimpse of one of the twentieth century’s great voices at the very beginning of his career.

After intermission, the evening culminates with Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat Major, op. 20, one of the undisputed miracles of Western chamber music and performed by memory. Written when Mendelssohn was just sixteen years old, it remains unsurpassed in its brilliance, invention, and sheer joy. From the sweeping opening movement to the gossamer Scherzo and the fugal finale, it is a work that never fails to astonish.
