Andrey Baranov is one of our regular guest leaders, highly valued by both the orchestra and the audience. This season, he returns with a program centered around the premiere of a new arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto for violin and string orchestra—a project commissioned by Andrey and Camerata Nordica. Known as a masterwork of the violin repertoire, and one of the best-known violin concertos, this arrangement allows us to bring this absolute masterpiece to venues otherwise not possible to visit with a full symphony orchestra.
The program opens with a rarely performed piece by W.A. Mozart, composed during a period when he was exploring counterpoint. The Adagio and Fugue remains somewhat mysterious, as there is no known commission, and its purpose is still a puzzle to music historians.
To close the concert, Andrey has selected a piece close to his heart, Josef Suk's Serenade for Strings. While studying under Antonín Dvořák at the Prague Conservatory, Suk's music often carried a melancholy tone. Dvořák suggested he try composing something lighter, leading Suk to create the Serenade for Strings. This piece not only brought Suk fame but also won the admiration of Johannes Brahms, who personally endorsed its publication.
